Lighting layers: why one ceiling light is never enough

Most Indian rooms are handed over with a single light in the centre of the ceiling and a fan. That gives you one setting: on. It is the cheapest thing to change and the thing that most changes how a room feels.

Three layers, three switches

1. Ambient — the general wash. Cove lighting, downlights, or a decent central fixture. This is the one you already have.
2. Task — light aimed at what your hands are doing. Under-cabinet strips in the kitchen, a reading light beside the bed, something over the study desk.
3. Accent — light on a thing, not on the room. A wall washer on textured plaster, a picture light, a strip inside a bookcase.

The layers matter less than the switching. Three layers on one switch is still one setting. Put each on its own circuit and a room gets an evening mode without a single dimmer.

The room should be able to change as the day ends. Task-bright at 7pm, lamp-warm at 11.

Colour temperature: pick a number and hold it

Warm white sits around 2700–3000K. Neutral is about 4000K. Daylight is 5000K and above, and it belongs in a garage.

Use 3000K almost everywhere in a home. Consider 4000K over a kitchen worktop if you cook seriously. What you must not do is mix temperatures in one room — two different whites in the same ceiling is the single most common reason a well-designed room looks cheap in photographs.

Check the CRI

Colour Rendering Index describes how honestly a light shows colour. Below 80, wood goes grey and skin goes ill. Look for CRI 90+ anywhere you eat, dress or look in a mirror. It is rarely printed on the box in a hardware shop, which tells you something about what is on the shelf.

Cheap wins

• A 5A socket on the wall switch beside the bed, so a table lamp is part of the lighting rather than a thing you reach behind.
• Under-cabinet strips in the kitchen. You stop working in your own shadow.
• A second switch at the bedroom door for the bedside circuit.
• Downlights away from the walls, not in a grid — light on a wall makes a room look wider than light on the floor.

All of this has to be decided before the false ceiling closes and the walls are painted. It is the one part of an interior that is genuinely hard to add afterwards.
