The largest object in the house, and the only one you interact with using your whole body. It's also governed by two numbers you cannot argue with. We get the arithmetic right first — then build the sculpture around it.

The arithmetic

Comfort is a
measured thing.

A staircase that feels wrong is always a rise-and-going problem, and it's always unfixable once it's cast. Riser around 165mm, tread around 280, railing at 900 from the nose, baluster gap under 100 so a child's head can't pass. These numbers come before any conversation about material — and every riser in a flight must match to within 5mm, because your foot learns the first step and expects every one after it.

Fixing & load

Carried into structure

A slim steel flight still lands real load on the slab and the wall. We anchor the stringer into structure, not just plaster, so twenty years of daily traffic never works it loose.

Non-slip nosing

Grip on the edge

The front lip of a tread is where a wet or sock-footed slip happens. A subtle non-slip nosing holds grip without turning your sculpture into a fire escape.

Headroom

2m clear overhead

The ceiling over a flight has to clear a tall head on every step. We check headroom against the floor opening early — a landing you duck under is a mistake cast in concrete.

Handrail grip

Graspable and unbroken

A rail you can actually wrap a hand around, running continuous to the last step. The height is code; the grip and the continuity are what your palm trusts on the way down in the dark.

Turn geometry

Landings over winders

Where a flight turns, winder treads taper to nothing at the inside — a classic ankle-turner. We use a landing or hold the going across the turn, so the corner is as safe as the straight.

Creak control

Silent underfoot

A stair that announces every late-night trip down has treads working against their fixings. We bed and fix each tread so the flight stays quiet, not just solid.

Warm treads on a slim steel stringer — the modern duplex default, quiet underfoot and light through the core.

Gaps kept under 100mm with a rod or glass infill, so light moves straight through and the flight feels weightless.

A stair is the one object in the house you use head to foot, in the dark, without looking. Everything we build — the even rise, the handrail height, the step lighting — is tuned for the body that takes it twenty times a day.

The numbers

Get the numbers
wrong and it's cast in.

A flight that feels off is never a finish problem — it's rise and going, and it's permanent the day the concrete sets. We settle the riser, the tread and the railing on paper before anyone talks about timber or glass, because these are the numbers you can't argue with later.

An open void beneath a stair is the most-wasted volume in most villas. Almost anything can go there — storage, a study nook, a powder room, a display — as long as it's something. We design the understair as part of the flight, not an afterthought.
