Rounded, strapped to the wall
Corners softened below chest height and every tall unit fixed back, so a climbing four-year-old can't bring the furniture down.

Low-VOC finish
Paints that don't off-gas
A child sleeps in this room ten hours a night. We specify low-emission paints and adhesives so the air is clean from the first day.

Socket safety
Shuttered, above the bed
Power points are shuttered and set above desk height, out of reach of small fingers and clear of where they play.

Wipeable surfaces
Scrub-proof, not precious
Crayon, glue and juice happen. Finishes are chosen to take a wet cloth and a scrub without marking or peeling at the edge.

Ventilation
Air that keeps moving
A closed room with the door shut warms and stuffs up overnight. We keep an air path so it's still fresh by morning.

Made to be re-set
Rails, shelves and the desk top are fixed so they can be raised as the child grows — a spanner and an afternoon, not a new room.

Two singles if the floor takes it — bunks are a space compromise, and the top bunk stops being fun at about twelve. If you need the bunk, we'd rather build it in than buy one, so the ladder and rail are proper joinery.
Low-VOC paints and adhesives throughout, anti-borer treated boards, and no glass below adult chest height. Every tall unit is anchored to the wall. None of that is an upgrade line on the quote.
Keep the expensive things neutral and the cheap things childish. Carcass, wardrobe and desk in a finish that ages; colour, handles, bedding and decals doing the personality. Then it's a weekend to change, not a project.
