Murphy bed
Folds flat to a joinery wall and reclaims the whole floor. The most convincing conversion, and the one worth spending on the hardware for.
A guest room used twice a year is the most expensive square footage in your home. The good ones aren't guest rooms at all — they're your room, which converts. So we design for the fifty weeks first, and the two weeks second.
Fifty weeks a year this is your study, gym, hobby table or the place the ironing board actually lives. Two weeks a year it hosts your parents. Build it around the first job and the second takes care of itself in one movement.
It's your room, most of the year
Movement to make the bed appear
A daybed sleeps, properly
Yours for fifty weeks,
theirs for two.
The best guest rooms aren't guest rooms at all — they're your room, which happens to convert. These are the six things a space pulling double duty actually needs, built for the fifty weeks first.
Light control
Blackout for them, bright for you
A study by day wants full daylight; a guest at 6am wants pitch dark. Layered blinds give both — a sheer to work under, a blackout to sleep behind.
Fresh air
Ventilated for a shut door
A spare room sits sealed most of the year and turns stuffy. We plan a vent or a quiet fan so a week of guests, door closed, doesn't mean stale air by morning.
Quiet
Softened against the household
Guests sleep while the house is still awake. A soft wall, a rug and a solid-core door keep the late TV and the early kitchen out of the room.
Linen store
Guest bedding kept ready
Spare pillows, a duvet and fresh sheets need a home in the room, not a shelf three rooms away. A dedicated cavity keeps a guest set aired and to hand.
The mattress
A real bed, not a token one
The most-skimped part of any convertible is what the guest actually sleeps on. We fit a proper mattress or a sprung daybed base — two weeks still means real nights.
Daily wear
Built for two lives, not one
A room pulling double duty gets twice the use — a chair rolling, a bed folding, a wardrobe opening daily. Surfaces and edges are specced tougher so it lasts.
Folds flat to a joinery wall and reclaims the whole floor. The most convincing conversion, and the one worth spending on the hardware for.
Reads as a sofa or seating by day, pulls out to sleep two by night. Best where the room is really a study that occasionally hosts.
Two singles that split for a family and push together for a couple. Honest and flexible when you host often enough to stop pretending.
The whole trick is the transition — desk-and-clear-floor by day, made-up guest room in the time it takes to swing a bed down. Everything is built so that swap takes seconds and looks like it was always meant to.
Fifty-to-two is a bad ratio to design around. We flip it — the room is yours, fully used, most of the year, and becomes a proper guest room on demand rather than sitting sealed and waiting for someone to arrive.
Parents down for a week don't want a themed room — they want a bed that opens easily, an empty shelf, a socket by the pillow and somewhere to open a case. Get those five things right and the room feels like a hotel.
A bed that opens in one movement, on good hardware
One empty shelf and two hangers, kept free
A bedside surface with a socket in reach
A mirror and room to open a suitcase

It's my study fifty weeks a year. My mother has never once known.
