A shelf loaded with folded stacks sags if the run is too wide. We cap the unsupported span so the boards stay flat a decade in.

A fully sealed bay traps humidity and invites borer. Treated boards plus a breathing gap keep the carcass dry and the clothes fresh.

If your ceiling is over 9 feet, yes — that's 450mm of depth doing nothing otherwise. It's for suitcases and winter bedding, not things you need weekly. We'd rather build it and have you use it twice a year than leave the void.
They can, with a gap and a moisture barrier behind. Directly against a wall that gets monsoon rain is how you find mould on the back of your clothes. We check which walls are exposed at measurement.
