Small balconies, big evenings

The standard Bengaluru balcony is somewhere between thirty and sixty square feet, faces a neighbour, and is currently drying clothes. It can be the best seat in the flat, and it takes very little.

Decide the one thing it is for

Coffee for two. Somewhere to smoke. A place for plants you actually tend. Pick one. Balconies fail when they are asked to be an outdoor dining room, a garden and a laundry at once — the furniture for all three arrives and nobody sits there.

Go vertical

The floor is the scarce resource, so keep it clear and use the walls and the railing.

• Railing planters hold a surprising amount and take no floor at all.
• A narrow ledge along the railing — six inches is enough for two cups — beats a table you have to walk around.
• Wall-mounted or folding seating, so the space is walkable when nobody's out there.

Deal with the floor and the sun

Outdoor decking tiles that clip over the existing floor are the highest-impact change per rupee: they warm the space instantly and lift the surface above the water that pools in a downpour. Choose composite over natural wood unless you enjoy oiling things twice a year.

For the sun, a bamboo or reed blind on the open side does more than any furniture. It cuts the glare, hides the neighbour's balcony, and moves in the breeze, which is most of what makes a small outdoor space feel pleasant.

You are not trying to make it bigger. You are trying to make it somewhere you would choose to sit.

Light it for the evening

This is the part everyone forgets. A balcony with no light is a balcony you use until sunset. One warm, weather-rated fixture — or a string of them along the railing — and the space stays useful for the four hours of the day you are actually home.

What about closing it in?

Glazing a balcony buys you a usable room in the monsoon and loses you the only outdoor space in the flat. Many associations also don't permit it, and doing it anyway can complicate a resale.

Where the rules allow and you genuinely want the extra room, we design it so it can be reversed. Where they don't, we say so rather than take the job and hope nobody notices.
